D&J Quality Electric, Inc. was started be Hathcock Electric owned by Zural E. Hathcock. Zural began his electrical trade working in Clovis, New Mexico, at the Air Force Base during World War II. After World War II was over he received his electrical contractors license. He then opened a retail electric business in Elida, New Mexico. This was a family business; as he taught his three sons the electrical trade. The oldest boy Tommy Rhea Hathcock, (Dennis Hathcock's dad), picked up where his dad left off and relocated the business to Colorado Springs, CO where he became an electrical contractor as well. The other two boys worked mostly in the trade for a majority of their lives. Tommy began his contracting in 1962, when his son Dennis was 2 years old. As Dennis grew up he worked with his Dad and when he turned 20 he received his electrical journeyman's license, one year later he received his Master License. He then in 1983 started his own company D&J Quality Electric, Inc.
